Solar flaring activity was at low levels over the past 24 hours with background C-class flaring. The largest flare was a C2.1 flare (SIDC Flare 8213) peaking on July 20 at 07:46 UTC. A total of 4 numbered sunspot groups were identified on the visible solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 916 (NOAA Active Region 4489, currently located at S07W17) and SIDC Sunspot Group 918 (NOAA Active Region 4491, currently located at S12E19) are both classified as magnetic type beta and were decreasing over the past 24 hours. SIDC Sunspot Group 919 (NOAA Active Region 4492, currently located at N15E69 and classified as magnetic type beta) has rotated more onto the visible disk, but remained inactive. A new quickly evolving region with rapid flux emergence, SIDC Sunspot Group 920, is currently located at N05E20 and classified as magnetic type beta-gamma. This region is expected to contribute to the flaring activity over the next 24 hours. The solar flaring activity is expected to be low over the next 24 hours with C-class flares expected and chances for M-class flaring.
No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
SIDC Coronal Hole 149 (mid-to-equatorial latitude coronal hole with a negative polarity) has reached the central meridian on July 19 and continues to reside there. An associated high speed stream arrival might be expected at Earth towards the end of July 21. SIDC Coronal Hole 142 (recurrent mid-latitude coronal hole with a positive polarity) is expected to cross the central meridian over the next 24 hours. A high speed-stream related to it could be anticipated at Earth starting towards the end of July 23, possibly mixed with ongoing high speed stream from SIDC 149.
Over the past 24 hours the solar wind parameters (as measured by ACE at L1) have registered nominal slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed was below 315 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field (B) was weak with a maximum magnitude of 5.3 nT and a minimum north-south (Bz) component of - 4.2 nT. The B field phi angle remained predominantly in the positive sector (directed away from the Sun). The solar wind parameters are expected to reflect nominal slow solar wind conditions over the next day until an anticipated high-speed stream arrival late UTC on July 21 or early July 22.
The geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours have been quiet. Predominantly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected until UTC evening of July 21 or early July 22 when active to minor storm levels might occur with chances for isolated moderate storm conditions due to an anticipated high-speed stream arrival related to SIDC coronal hole 149.
Over the past 24 hours the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was at nominal levels and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux as measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 was slowly oscillating around the 1000 pfu threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at the border of nominal to moderate levels and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours.
