Zonnevlekkengebieden en zonnevlammen

Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours with only C-class flares identified. A total of 7 sunspot groups were identified on the visible solar disk. The strongest activity was a C3.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8267) peaking on July 24 at 22:03 UTC. It was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 920 (NOAA Active Region 4493), currently located at N05W36, which remains the largest region, classified as magnetic type beta-gamma. SIDC Sunspot Group 886 (NOAA Active Region 4494), currently located at S04E22, remains classified as magnetic type beta-delta and continued to exhibit further flux emergence. It has contributed to the low levels of activity together with SIDC SSG 920. SIDC Sunspot Group 923 (NOAA Active Region 4496), currently located at N05E57, has exhibited some growth and is classified as magnetic type beta. It has remained quiet. The remaining active regions have been simple and quiet. The solar flaring activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels over the next 24 hours with possible M-class flaring from SIDC SSG 920, SIDC SSG 886 or SIDC SSG 923.

Coronale massa uitstoten

No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours. The slow and faint CME (SIDC CME 699) first visible in LASCO/C2 data around 04:49 UTC on July 24 has been modelled to have an Earth-directed component with a possible arrival late UTC on July 27th or early UTC on July 28. The CME was related to a filament eruption, a C2.4 flaring near S21E09 and a weak dimming.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours the solar wind parameters (as measured by ACE at L1) was under a waning influence of an ongoing high speed stream. The solar wind speed was on a decreasing trend varying in the range of 634 to 498 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field (B) was mild with a maximum magnitude of 5.5 nT and a minimum north-south (Bz) component of - 3.6 nT. The B field phi angle was almost entirely in the negative sector (directed towards the Sun) reflecting the polarity of the geo-effective coronal hole. The solar wind parameters over the next 24 hours are expected to show a gradual decrease towards slow solar wind conditions.

Geomagnetisme

The geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were globally quiet with two unsettled periods registered over Belgium between 13 to 14 UTC on July 24 and between 11 and 12 UTC on July 25. Predominantly quiet conditions are expected for the next days with possible isolated unsettled periods. Chances for a glancing blow ICME arrival late on July 27 or early on July 28 might bring active conditions with possible isolated minor storms.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was at nominal levels and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux as measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 has expected to exceed the 1000 pfu threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to exceed the threshold again over the next days. The 24-hour electron fluence was at nominal levels and is expected to increase towards moderate levels over the next 24 hours and remain at moderate levels in the upcoming days.
