Zonnevlekkengebieden en zonnevlammen

Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours with only C-class flares identified. A total of 6 sunspot groups were identified on the visible solar disk. The strongest activity was a C4.2 flare (SIDC Flare 8272) peaking on July 26 at 07:31 UTC. It was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 922 (NOAA Active Region 4495), currently located at  S02W00. The region is classified as magnetic type beta and has exhibited some flux emergence contributing to the low levels of activity. SIDC Sunspot Group 920 (NOAA Active Region 4493), currently located at N05W63, has exhibited a decay and is now classified as magnetic type beta. It has produced several low C-class flares. SIDC Sunspot Group 923 (NOAA Active Region 4496), currently located at N05E43, is classified as magnetic type beta and has produced isolated low C-class flaring. SIDC Sunspot Group 886 (NOAA Active Region 4494), currently located at S04E09, has exhibited a decay. It is classified as magnetic type beta-delta, but has remained quiet. The solar flaring activity is expected to be at low levels over the next 24 hours with very likely C-class flaring and chances for isolated M-class flaring.

Coronale massa uitstoten

No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.

Coronale gaten

A small mid-latitudinal fraction of a recurrent high- latitude positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159) has started to cross the central meridian. The coronal hole might become geo-effective once a larger fraction of it rotates onto the central meridian expectedly within the next 24 hours. The related high-speed stream might reach the Earth on July 30th.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours the solar wind parameters (as measured by ACE at L1) continued to reflect a waning influence from a high speed stream. The solar wind speed varied in the range of 540 to 465 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field (B) was mild with a maximum magnitude of 5.4 nT and a minimum north-south (Bz) component of - 4.3 nT. The B field phi angle remained predominantly in the negative sector (directed towards the Sun). The solar wind parameters over the next 24 hours are expected to continue their decrease towards slow solar wind conditions. Further enhancement of the solar wind parameters is possible later on July 27 and July 28 in case of any ICME arrival related to the CME from July 24.

Geomagnetisme

The geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were globally quiet with quiet to unsettled conditions registered over Belgium. Predominantly quiet conditions with possible isolated unsettled periods are expected for the next 24 hours. Chances for a glancing blow ICME arrival late on July 27 or early on July 28 might bring active conditions with possible isolated minor storms.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was at nominal levels and is expected to remain so over the 24 hours.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux as measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 has expected to exceed the 1000 pfu threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to exceed the threshold again over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at the border of nominal to moderate levels and is expected to remain so in the next 24 hours.
