Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours, with 1 M-class flares identified. A total of 8 numbered sunspot groups were identified on the disk over the past 24 hours. SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4499) which has a Beta-Delta magnetic configuration produced most of the flaring activity in the last 24 hours. SIDC Sunspot Group 931 (NOAA Active Region 4500) has grown in size and magnetic complexity (Beta) has also produced C-class flares. The largest flare was a M1.9 flare (SIDC Flare 8298) peaking on July 30 at 17:00 UTC, which was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 860. This region is rotating over the west limb off the visible solar disk. Solar flaring activity is expected to be moderate over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares expected and M-class flares likely.
A Halo Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) (SIDC CME 701) was observed in LASCO-C2 data at 16:36 UTC on July 30, with an estimated speed of around 1522 km/s. The CME is associated with a M1.9 flare (SIDC 8298) peaking at 17:00 UTC on July 30, which was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 860 (NOAA Active Regions 4492) and a type II and type IV radio burst. This CME is expected to impact the Earth around 04:00 UTC on August 2.
Slow solar wind conditions were recorded over the past 24 hours. The solar wind speed ranged between 310 km/s to 328 km/s. The total interplanetary magnetic field ranged from 2 to 4 nT, with the Bz reaching a minimum of -3 nT. The phi-angle was in the positive sector (directed away from the Sun) with periods in the negative. Slow solar wind conditions are expected in the next 24 hours, after which they will likely become enhanced due to the arrival of SIDC CME 701
The geomagnetic conditions were quiet globally (Kp 1-2) and quiet to unsettled locally (K BEL 1-3) in the last 24 hours. Quiet conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux crossed above the 10 pfu threshold at 18:30 UTC on July 30 and has now decreased again below the threshold since 04:40 UTC on July 31 and is continuing to gradually trend downward. The 50 MeV proton flux and 100 MeV proton flux also became elevated but stayed below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton event is associated with SIDC CME 701
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by the GOES-18 satellites, was above the 1000 pfu threshold between 19:00 UTC on July 30 between 00:05 UTC on July 31. The 2 MeV electron flux is expected to cross the threshold again during the next 24 hour. The 24-hour electron fluence was at normal levels and is expected to remain at normal levels over the next 24 hours.
