Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with only C-class flares. The largest flare was a C4.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8445), peaking at 20:59 UTC on August 21, which was associated with SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513, magnetic type beta- gamma-delta). There are currently six numbered active regions on the solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 929 remains the most complex group and grew over the past 24 hours. SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (magnetic type beta) emerged on disk in the northeast quadrant. SIDC Sunspot Group 947 decayed into a plage region. SIDC Sunspot Group 940 (NOAA Active Region 4507) rotated across the west limb. The solar flaring activity is expected to be moderate over the next 24 hours, with M-class flares very likely and a small chance for X-class flares.
A fast partial halo Coronal Mass Ejection (SIDC CME 713) was observed in LASCO/C2 coronagraph imagery starting from around 09:36 UTC on August 21, directed mainly west/northwestward. The CME was associated with a long-duration M1.6 flare (SIDC Flare 8441) from SIDC Sunspot Group 940 (NOAA Active Region 4507), located near the west limb. Preliminary analysis indicates that the bulk of the CME is expected to miss Earth, but a glancing blow arrival at Earth around August 24 cannot be excluded. Further analysis is ongoing. No other Earth-directed CMEs were observed in the available coronagraph imagery.
Over the past 24 hours, the solar wind parameters reflected a gradual return towards a slow solar wind regime under the waning influence of the high-speed stream. Speed values gradually decreased from around 530 km/s to around 420 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field values ranged between 2 nT and 6 nT. The Bz component varied between -4 nT and 4 nT. The interplanetary magnetic field angle was mostly in the negative sector. Slow solar wind conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
Geomagnetic conditions globally and locally were mostly at quiet levels over the past 24 hours (NOAA Kp 1 to 2, K BEL 1 to 2). Mostly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was below the 10 pfu threshold level over the past 24 hours, although a slight increase was observed in both GOES 18 and GOES 19 data. It is expected to remain below the threshold level over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 was around or above the 1000 pfu threshold level over the past 24 hours. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to remain around the 1000 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence is presently at moderate levels and is expected to remain so over the next 24 hours.
