Zonnevlekkengebieden en zonnevlammen

Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with several C-class flares recorded. The largest flare was a C3.5 flare (SIDC Flare 8455), peaking at 22:03 UTC on August 23, associated with SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Regions 4513; magnetic type beta-gamma-delta). There are currently four numbered active regions on the visible solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 929, which remains the most complex active region on the solar disk, was the main driver of the flaring activity observed over the past 24 hours. Low flaring activity was also produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517; magnetic type beta). The remaining active regions are relatively simple (magnetic type alpha or beta) and did not produce any significant flaring activity. Solar flaring activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares expected and M-class flares likely.

Coronale massa uitstoten

No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.

Coronale gaten

A positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159) started to cross the central meridian today, on August 24. The associated high-speed stream is expected to begin influencing the near-Earth environment from late on August 27 to early on August 28.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters (SOLAR-1 and ACE) reflected slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed decreased from 440 to 350 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field remained below 6 nT. The magnetic field orientation was predominantly in the negative sector (field directed towards the Sun). Slow solar wind conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.

Geomagnetisme

Geomagnetic conditions globally and locally over Belgium were mostly at quiet levels over the past 24 hours (NOAA Kp 1 to 2, K-BEL 1 to 2). Mostly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was still slightly elevated but remained well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain below the 10 pfu threshold over the next days.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux measured by GOES 18 and GOES 19 was mostly above the 1000 pfu threshold level during the first part of the period, before decreasing below the threshold after around 01:50 UTC on August 24 and 22:45 UTC on August 23, respectively. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux may exceed the alert threshold again over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to be at moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
