Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours, with one M-class flare recorded. The largest flare was an M1.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8470), peaking at 12:14 UTC on August 26, associated with SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513; magnetic type beta-gamma). There are currently five numbered active regions on the visible solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 929, which remains the largest active region on the solar disk, was the main driver of the flaring activity observed over the past 24 hours. Two new active regions emerged during the period in the northeast quadrant of the visible solar disk and were numbered SIDC Sunspot Group 949 (NOAA Active Region 4518; magnetic type beta) and SIDC Sunspot Group 950 (NOAA Active Region 4519; magnetic type beta). Low flaring activity was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 949, while SIDC Sunspot Group 950 remained quiet. SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517; magnetic type beta) exhibited some growth over the past 24 hours but did not produce any significant flaring activity. Solar flaring activity is expected to be at low to moderate levels over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a chance of M-class flares.

Coronale massa uitstoten

A narrow and faint coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed towards the east in STEREO-A/COR2 imagery, possibly associated with the M2.2 flare (SIDC Flare 8468), peaking at 06:34 UTC on August 26, produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513). The eruption was observed in SDO/AIA, GOES/SUVI and STEREO-A/EUVI imagery, with on-disk coronal dimming near the source region. Due to the central disk location of the source region, an Earth-directed component cannot be excluded, although the CME signature is narrow and faint and the analysis is limited by data availability, including a data gap in SOHO/LASCO-C2/C3 imagery. A weak impact at Earth may be possible around August 29, but confidence is low. No other Earth-directed CMEs were identified in the available coronagraph imagery during the period.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters (SOLAR-1 and ACE) reflected slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between 260 and 300 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field remained below 5 nT. The magnetic field orientation was predominantly in the negative sector (field directed towards the Sun). Solar wind conditions are expected to become slightly enhanced over the next 24 hours due to the anticipated arrival of a high-speed stream from a positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159). A further enhancement is possible on August 28 due to the possible arrival of SIDC CME 714, which lifted off the Sun on August 25.

Geomagnetisme

Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet both globally and locally over Belgium (NOAA Kp = 1 to 2; K-Bel = 1 to 2). Geomagnetic conditions are expected to reach active levels over the next 24 hours, with a chance of minor storm periods due to the anticipated arrival of a high-speed stream from a positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159). On August 28, active conditions are expected, with a chance of isolated minor to moderate storm periods due to the possible arrival of SIDC CME 714, which lifted off the Sun on August 25.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours, with a small chance of particle event occurring if any high-energy flares or eruptions occur.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, fluctuated around the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux may exceed the alert threshold again over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to remain at moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
