Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with only one C-class flare recorded. The largest flare was a C1.1 flare (SIDC Flare 8479), peaking at 04:22 UTC on August 28, associated with SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513; magnetic type beta-gamma). There are currently six numbered sunspot groups on the visible solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 929 remains the largest and most complex region on the disk. A new active region emerged during the period in the southeast quadrant of the visible solar disk and was numbered SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (magnetic type beta), but it remained quiet. The remaining active regions are relatively simple (magnetic type alpha or beta) and did not produce any significant flaring activity. Solar flaring activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a small chance of M-class flares.
A halo coronal mass ejection (SIDC CME 715) was observed in SOLAR-1/CCOR-2 coronagraph imagery from around 18:00 UTC on August 27, directed primarily towards the northeast from Earth's perspective. The CME is deemed to be backsided, and no impact on the solar wind conditions near Earth is expected. No Earth-directed CMEs were detected in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed increased slightly from about 260 km/s to about 300 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field remained below 7 nT. The magnetic field orientation was predominantly in the negative sector, with the field directed towards the Sun, until around 06:30 UTC on August 28, before switching to the positive sector, with the field directed away from the Sun. Solar wind conditions are expected to become slightly enhanced over the next 24 hours due to the possible arrival of SIDC CME 714, which lifted off the Sun on August 25, possibly combined with a mild high-speed stream influence from the positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159).
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet both globally and locally over Belgium (NOAA Kp = 1 to 2; K-Bel = 1 to 2). Mostly quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, with possible active conditions and isolated minor storm periods due to the possible arrival of SIDC CME 714, which lifted off the Sun on August 25, combined with a mild high-speed stream influence from the positive polarity coronal hole SIDC Coronal Hole 159.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, exceeded the 1000 pfu alert threshold at the beginning of the period, with GOES-18 remaining above the threshold until 02:30 UTC on August 28 and GOES-19 until 23:05 UTC on August 27. The flux remained below the threshold for the rest of the period. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to remain below the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to remain at normal to moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
