Zonnevlekkengebieden en zonnevlammen

Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with several C-class flares recorded. The largest flare was a C3.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8482), peaking at 01:20 UTC on August 30, associated with active regions behind the east limb. There are currently five numbered sunspot groups on the visible solar disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517; magnetic type beta), which is expected to rotate over the west limb in the coming hours, produced low-level C-class flares. SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513; magnetic type beta) is approaching the west limb but remained quiet. The remaining active regions are relatively simple, with alpha or beta magnetic configurations, and did not produce any significant flaring activity. Solar flaring activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a small chance for M-class flares.

Coronale massa uitstoten

A large filament eruption was observed in the northeastern quadrant near N34E10, starting around 07:00 UTC on August 30 in SDO/AIA 304 A and GOES/SUVI 304 A . Any associated CME will be analysed once coronagraph data becomes available. No other Earth-directed CMEs were detected in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected the continued influence of a mild high-speed stream associated with the positive polarity coronal hole (SIDC Coronal Hole 159). The solar wind speed ranged between about 400 km/s and 480 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field reached values up to about 12 nT before decreasing to around 5 nT by the end of the period. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, fluctuated between about -11 nT and 11 nT, with several southward intervals. The magnetic field orientation was predominantly in the positive sector (field directed away from the Sun). Solar wind conditions are expected to remain slightly disturbed over the next 24 hours before gradually returning towards slow solar wind conditions.

Geomagnetisme

Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours reached active levels both globally and locally over Belgium (NOAA Kp = 4-; K-Bel = 4). Mostly quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, with possible active periods due to the ongoing high-speed stream influence from the positive polarity coronal hole SIDC Coronal Hole 159.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, remained below the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours. The greater than 2 MeV electron flux may exceed the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at normal levels and is expected to remain at normal to moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
