Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with two C-class flares recorded. The largest flare was a C2.2 flare (SIDC Flare 8483), peaking at 16:56 UTC on August 30, produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513; magnetic type beta). This region is currently near the west limb and rotating out of view. A C1.0 flare, peaking at 03:33 UTC on August 31, was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517; magnetic type beta). Low-level B-class flaring activity was also produced by SIDC Sunspot Groups 929, 948 and 949 (NOAA Active Regions 4513, 4517 and 4518, respectively). Solar flaring activity is expected to be very low over the next 24 hours, with a chance of C-class flares.
No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours. A slow CME associated with a filament eruption near N35E05 was observed propagating towards the northeast from around 12:10 UTC on August 30. The CME had an estimated speed of about 250-300 km/s and showed north- eastward deflection. It is not expected to impact Earth.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected the continued influence of a mild high-speed stream. The solar wind speed gradually decreased from around 470 km/s to about 420 km/s, ranging between approximately 415 km/s and 485 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field remained relatively weak, ranging between about 3 nT and 6 nT. The north- south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, fluctuated between about -6 nT and +5 nT, with several short southward intervals. Solar wind conditions are expected to gradually returning towards slow solar wind conditions.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet to unsettled globally, with NOAA Kp reaching 3, while locally over Belgium an isolated active period was observed, with K-Bel reaching 4. Mostly quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, with a possible but not very likely, isolated active period due to the remaining influence of the high-speed stream.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, increased over the past 24 hours and exceeded the 1000 pfu alert threshold towards the end of the period. The enhancement is likely associated with the high-speed stream observed over the past days. The electron flux may remain around or above the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence remained at nominal levels and is expected to remain at nominal to moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
