Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with several C-class flares recorded. A total of five numbered sunspot groups were present on the visible solar disk. The largest flare was a C2.6 flare (SIDC Flare 8487), peaking at 15:16 UTC on August 31, produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (NOAA Active Region 4520; magnetic type beta), currently located at S12W10. This region also produced a C1.6 flare and several B-class flares. SIDC Sunspot Group 954 (NOAA Active Region 4523; magnetic type alpha), currently near the east limb, produced two C1.4 flares. A C1.1 flare was also produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517) as it rotated over the west limb. Low-level B-class activity was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 929 (NOAA Active Region 4513), which has now rotated over the west limb. Solar flaring activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a small chance of M-class flares.
No Earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected mostly slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed gradually decreased from around 440 km/s to around 390 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field remained weak, ranging between about 4 nT and 6 nT. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, fluctuated between about -6 nT and +4 nT. Slow solar wind conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were mostly quiet both globally and locally over Belgium. An isolated active period was observed locally at the beginning of the period, with K-Bel reaching 4. Mostly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain at background levels and below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
Electron fluxes at GEO: The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, exceeded the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours, likely in response to the high- speed stream observed over the past week, and was around the threshold towards the end of the period. The electron flux may remain around or above the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence increased to moderate levels and is expected to remain at moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
