Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with several C-class flares recorded. The largest flare was a C5.7 flare (SIDC Flare 8499), peaking at 21:10 UTC on September 1, from an active region close to the northeast limb. This region, possibly a returning active region, is rotating onto the visible solar disk and showed notable activity during the period, producing a B6.4, C5.7 and C1.1 flare. A CME was also observed propagating towards the east in association with this activity. SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (NOAA Active Region 4520; magnetic type beta), currently located at S11W23, produced low-level B-class flaring activity and was decreasing over the past 24 hours. SIDC Sunspot Group 953 (NOAA Active Region 4522) also produced B-class flaring activity. Additional C-class flaring was observed from SIDC Sunspot Group 948 (NOAA Active Region 4517) as it rotated over the west limb. Solar flaring activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares likely.
A CME was observed propagating towards the east, associated with the active region currently near the northeast limb. This region has shown enhanced flaring activity while rotating onto the visible solar disk, and further eruptive activity, including additional CMEs, may occur as the region rotates further onto the Earth-facing side. No Earth- directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
SIDC Coronal Hole 179, an newly merged equatorial coronal hole with positive polarity, was identified near the central part of the solar disk, centred around S01W23.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected mostly slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between about 365 km/s and 450 km/s, remaining mostly around 380 to 410 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field ranged between about 2.5 nT and 6.5 nT. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, fluctuated between about -6 nT and +5 nT. Slow solar wind conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet to unsettled both globally and locally over Belgium, with NOAA Kp and K-Bel reaching 3. Mostly quiet to unsettled geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain at background levels and below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, fluctuated around and above the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours. The electron flux may remain around the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence remained at moderate levels and is expected to remain close to moderate threshold levels over the next 24 hours.
