Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours, with one M-class flare recorded. There are currently three numbered sunspot groups on the visible solar disk. The largest flare was an M3.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8507), peaking at 19:20 UTC on September 2, produced by the returning SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524), currently located near the east limb at N12E76. The flare was associated with Type II and Type IV radio emissions and a fast halo CME SIDC Sunspot Group 943 also produced several C-class flares and may remain a source of further flaring and eruptive activity as it rotates further onto the visible disk. SIDC Sunspot Group 954 (NOAA Active Region 4523; magnetic type beta), currently located at N10E46, showed growth over the past 24 hours and produced several C-class flares, including a C4.2 flare peaking at 11:59 UTC on September 3. SIDC Sunspot Group 952 (NOAA Active Region 4521; magnetic type alpha) remained stable and quiet. Solar flaring activity is expected to be low to moderate over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a chance of M-class flares.
A halo coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed from around 19:36 UTC on September 2, associated with the M3.0 flare from SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524) close to the east limb. The eruption was accompanied by Type II and Type IV radio emissions, and the CME had an estimated plane-of-sky speed of about 740 km/s. Despite its halo appearance, due to the source location close to the east limb, the CME is not expected to have a significant Earth-directed component.
SIDC Coronal Hole 179, an equatorial coronal hole with positive polarity, has reached the central part of the solar disk. A high- speed stream associated with this coronal hole may influence the solar wind conditions near Earth in the coming couples days.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected mostly slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between about 330 km/s and 430 km/s, remaining mostly between 350 km/s and 410 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field ranged between about 1 nT and 9 nT. The north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field, Bz, fluctuated between about -5 nT and +7 nT. Slow solar wind conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet both globally and locally over Belgium, with NOAA Kp and K-Bel reaching 2. Mostly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain at background levels and below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, fluctuated around and above the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours. The electron flux is expected to remain around the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to remain at moderate levels over the next 24 hours.
