Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours, with one M-class flare recorded. There are currently five numbered sunspot groups on the visible solar disk. The largest flare was an M1.2 flare (SIDC Flare 8523), peaking at 07:53 UTC on September 4, produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524; magnetic type beta-gamma), currently located at N12E63 and showing growth. This region also produced several C-class flares, including a C7.9 flare peaking at 16:30 UTC on September 3. The C7.9 flare was associated with Type II radio emission starting at 16:29 UTC. SIDC Sunspot Group 954 (NOAA Active Region 4523; magnetic type beta), currently located at N10E31, also produced several C-class flares over the period. Solar flaring activity is expected to remain moderate over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares expected and M-class flares likely.
Multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed propagating towards the east and northeast over the past 24 hours, associated with the eruptive activity from SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524). One of these CMEs was associated with the C7.9 flare and Type II radio emission on September 3 and was observed from around 17:48 UTC, with an estimated speed of about 340 km/s. Due to the source region being located close to the east limb, no significant Earth-directed component is expected. No Earth-directed CMEs were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
SIDC Coronal Hole 179, an equatorial coronal hole with positive polarity, has reached the central part of the solar disk. A high- speed stream associated with this coronal hole may influence the solar wind conditions near Earth in the coming days.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected mostly slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between about 365 km/s and 435 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field ranged between about 1 nT and 8 nT, while its north-south component, Bz, fluctuated between about -5 nT and +5 nT. Mostly slow solar wind conditions are expected to prevail over the next 24 hours. An enhancement of the solar wind conditions is expected in about two days due to the anticipated arrival of a high-speed stream associated with the positive polarity equatorial SIDC Coronal Hole 179.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet both globally and locally over Belgium. Mostly quiet geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours. From around September 6, unsettled to active conditions may occur due to the anticipated arrival of the high- speed stream associated with the positive polarity SIDC Coronal Hole 179.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain at background levels and below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, fluctuated around and above the 1000 pfu alert threshold during the past 24 hours before decreasing below the threshold towards the end of the period. The electron flux is expected to remain below the alert threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to decrease to normal levels over the next 24 hours.
