Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with only C-class flares recorded. The largest flare was a C6.7 flare (SIDC Flare 8526), peaking at 19:30 UTC on September 4, produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524; magnetic type beta- gamma), currently located at N12E49. The flare was associated with Type II and Type IV radio emissions, with the Type II burst starting at 19:22 UTC. SIDC Sunspot Group 943 remained the main source of flaring activity and also produced a C6.5 flare peaking at 10:45 UTC on September 5. Additional low-level C-class flaring was produced by SIDC Sunspot Groups 940 and 957 (NOAA Active Regions 4527 and 4526). Solar flaring activity is expected to remain low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a chance of M-class flares.
Multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) were observed propagating towards the east and northeast over the past 24 hours, predominantly associated with the ongoing eruptive activity from SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524). One of these CMEs was observed from around 19:36 UTC on September 4 and was associated with the C6.7 flare and Type II and Type IV radio emissions. The CME had an estimated plane-of- sky speed of about 700 km/s. Due to the source region being located towards the eastern side of the solar disk, no significant Earth-directed component is expected. No Earth-directed CMEs were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.
SIDC Coronal Hole 179, an equatorial coronal hole with positive polarity, has moved to the western side of the solar disk. A high- speed stream associated with this coronal hole is expected to influence the solar wind conditions near Earth in the coming days.
Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between about 320 km/s and 405 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field ranged between about 2.5 nT and 6.5 nT, while its north-south component, Bz, fluctuated between about -5 nT and +4.5 nT. Slow solar wind conditions are expected initially, with an enhancement possible later today or on September 6 due to the anticipated arrival of the high-speed stream associated with the positive polarity SIDC Coronal Hole 179.
Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were mostly quiet both globally and locally over Belgium, with an isolated unsettled period. Mostly quiet to unsettled conditions are expected initially. Active conditions, with a chance of isolated minor storm periods, are possible from September 6 due to the anticipated arrival of the high-speed stream associated with SIDC Coronal Hole 179.
Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux remained at background levels and well below the 10 pfu threshold. The proton flux is expected to remain at background levels and below the 10 pfu threshold over the next 24 hours.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, fluctuated around the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to remain around or below the threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at moderate levels and is expected to decrease to normal levels over the next 24 hours.
