Zonnevlekkengebieden en zonnevlammen

Solar flaring activity was moderate over the past 24 hours, with one M-class flare recorded. Despite having decayed, SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (NOAA Active Region 4520), near the west limb, produced the largest flare of the period, an M1.0 flare (SIDC Flare 8533) peaking at 15:18 UTC on September 5. The flare was associated with strong coronal dimming, a fast halo coronal mass ejection (CME), and a proton event. SIDC Sunspot Group 943 (NOAA Active Region 4524; magnetic type beta), currently located at N12E38, remained the main source of subsequent flaring activity, producing several C-class flares, including a C8.5 flare peaking at 17:46 UTC on September 5 and a C5.0 flare peaking at 10:42 UTC on September 6. The remaining active regions produced no significant flaring activity. Solar flaring activity is expected to be low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares likely and a small chance of M-class flares.

Coronale massa uitstoten

A fast halo coronal mass ejection (CME), first observed in coronagraph imagery from around 15:36 UTC on September 5, was associated with the M1.0 flare from the decayed SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (NOAA Active Region 4520) near the west limb. The CME had an estimated plane-of-sky speed of about 1400 km/s. Due to its source location and the estimated 3D propagation direction, there is only a low chance of arrival at Earth. If an Earth-directed component does arrive, it would most likely be as a glancing blow, potentially around September 8 before noon. No other Earth-directed CMEs were identified in the available coronagraph imagery over the past 24 hours.

Coronale gaten

SIDC Coronal Hole 179, an equatorial coronal hole with positive polarity, first reached the central meridian on September 3 and is now located on the western side of the solar disk. A high-speed stream associated with this coronal hole is expected to influence the solar wind conditions near Earth in the coming days.

Zonnewind

Over the past 24 hours, solar wind parameters reflected slow solar wind conditions. The solar wind speed ranged between about 320 km/s and 380 km/s. The interplanetary magnetic field ranged between about 3 nT and 8 nT, while its north-south component, Bz, fluctuated between about -5 nT and +6 nT. Slow solar wind conditions are expected initially. An enhancement is possible later on September 6 or on September 7 due to the anticipated arrival of the high-speed stream associated with the positive polarity SIDC Coronal Hole 179.

Geomagnetisme

Geomagnetic conditions over the past 24 hours were quiet to unsettled both globally and locally over Belgium, with NOAA Kp and K-Bel reaching 3. Mostly quiet to unsettled conditions are expected initially. Active conditions, with a chance of isolated minor storm periods, may occur from late September 6 or on September 7 due to the anticipated high-speed stream associated with SIDC Coronal Hole 179.

Proton flux niveaus

Over the past 24 hours, the greater than 10 MeV GOES proton flux was enhanced following the M1.0 flare from the decayed SIDC Sunspot Group 951 (NOAA Active Region 4520) near the west limb. The flare was associated with strong coronal dimming and a fast halo coronal mass ejection (CME). The greater than 10 MeV proton flux crossed the 10 pfu alert threshold at 16:15 UTC on September 5, reaching S1 proton event levels. The flux subsequently decreased and was below the 10 pfu threshold by the end of the period. The proton flux is expected to continue decreasing towards background levels over the next 24 hours.

Elektronenfluxen in geostationaire baan

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux, as measured by GOES-18 and GOES-19, remained mostly below the 1000 pfu alert threshold over the past 24 hours and is expected to remain below the threshold over the next 24 hours. The 24-hour electron fluence was at normal levels and is expected to remain at normal levels over the next 24 hours.
