Solar flaring activity was low over the past 24 hours, with only C-class flares identified. The largest flare was a C3.4 flare (SIDC Flare 8541) peaking on September 08 at 23:39 UTC, which was produced by SIDC Sunspot Group 946 (NOAA Active Regions 4514, 4528). A total of 8 numbered sunspot groups were identified on the disk over the past 24 hours, all having alpha or beta magnetic configuration. In the past 24 hours, the majority of the flaring was from SIDC Sunspot Group 952 (NOAA Active Region 4521) currently located at N09W43 and SIDC Sunspot Group 946 (NOAA Active Region 4528), currently located at S11E35. Solar flaring activity is expected to be low over the next 24 hours, with C-class flares very likely and a small chance for M-class flares.
No new Earth-directed Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) have been detected in the available coronagraph images.
SIDC Coronal Hole 180 (equatorial coronal hole with a positive polarity) first reached the central meridian on September 08 and is now positioned on the western side of the Sun. The high speed stream from this coronal hole is expected to influence solar wind conditions on 11 September.
Over the past 24 hours, the the solar wind conditions near Earth returned initially to slow solar wind conditions, with solar wind speed decreased from 560 km/s to 400 km/s, and interplanetary magnetic field around 6 nT. On September 8 around 04:00 UTC solar wind conditions became enhanced again following the ICME arrival associated with the SIDC CME 718, which left the sun on September 7 11:00 UTC. Solar wind speed increased again till 460km/s, interplanetary magnetic field increased to 10 nT. The minimum Bz reached about -6 nT. Enhanced solar wind conditions are expected to continue over the next 24 hours under the influence of this ICME, then returning to slow solar wind conditions until the expected High Speed Stream arrival of SIDC Coronal Hole 180 on September 11.
Over the last 24 hours, geomagnetic conditions were mainly active (NOAA Kp4, KBEL 4) reaching minor storm levels globally (NOAA Kp 5) on 8 September 15:00 UTC, and have now returned to unsettled conditions. Unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions are expected over the next 24 hours, due to the arrival of the ICME (Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejection) associated with SIDC CME 718. Unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions are also expected on September 11 due to the expected highspeed stream arrival of the SIDC Coronal Hole 180.
The greater than 10 MeV proton flux remained below the 10 pfu threshold and is expected to remain so over the next days.
The greater than 2 MeV electron flux exceeded the 1000 pfu alert threshold in response to the high solar wind speed associated with the Coronal Hole (SIDC CH 179) . During the next 24 hours, the greater than 2 MeV electron flux is expected to return below the 1000 pfu alert threshold due to the arrival of the ICME associated to CME 718. The 24h electron fluence has increased to moderate levels in the past 24 hours but is expected to return to nominal levels during the next period.
